Sustainability and innovation
As a large multinational energy company we have a unique responsibility towards our employees, the communities around our facilities and the environment.
We integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business to constantly find new solutions to reduce our environmental impact, respond to the needs of local communities and improve the safety of our employees and contractors.
We consider this responsibility a great opportunity to improve people's lives, and we believe that we are in the position to do just that. This is why, in 2015, Fortune magazine ranked Enel 5th on their 'Change the World' list - the only utility company featured.
Green energy
Climate change is one of the key global challenges we are facing. We are committed to energy production from renewable sources such as hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and cogeneration plants.
Today, we are the world leader in the development of renewable energy. 47% of our electricity generation already comes from zero-emission sources and we are constantly working with our technology partners to develop new, environmentally-friendly technologies to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050.
Listening to local communities
We are also involved in protecting the local environment in the areas where we operate. For us, sustainability means ensuring the long-term outlook of our company. In order to deliver this, we have to become an integral and fully engaged member of a local community, working with people to create shared value for all.
We therefore engage with communities to reduce the local environmental impact of our facilities. And we always take time to listen to people and communities and try to find solutions that support the sustainable economic development of a region.
A safe work place
We invest in the wellbeing of the people who work for Enel. Working in power plants or with high voltage lines requires very careful planning, safe equipment and clear procedures. The 'One Safety' project launched in 2012 standardises processes, languages and tools wherever we operate, to help us move ever closer to our 'Zero Accidents' goal.
“We're in the top five of Fortune magazine's 'Change the World' list - the only utility company to achieve this”
Recognition for Enel's sustainable activities
2015 is the fifth consecutive year that our Sustainability Report has been recognised by the UN Global Compact as among the best globally, while for the ninth year in a row Enel received the highest rating from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), highlighting our commitment to transparent and accurate sustainability reporting.
